چکیده

We present an extensive thermodynamic study of methane coadsorbed on graphite precoated with a saturated monolayer of carbon tetrachloride. A combination of heat capacity and volumetric equation of state data permit construction of the multilayer coadsorption phase diagram between 70 and 115 K. Displacement of the preadsorbed CCl4 by CH4 occurs by a continuous process across the temperature range studied. While the continuous nature of the transition implies a single phase mixed film during displacement, the observation of a commensurability transition characteristic of CH4 on bare graphite suggests the emergence of order in the coadsorbed CH4 in the early stages of displacement. At low temperatures and multilayer coverages, the coadsorption phase diagram shows small but measurable differences from the pure CH4 data, indicating that the multilayer film formed after displacement is not identical to that of CH4 in the absence of CCl4. At higher temperatures, a new first order phase transition is observed to correspond with the completion of displacement. One interpretation is that the phase boundary represents the melting of a nearly pure CH4 monolayer solid into a mixed liquid film phase, with the size of the melting point depression indicating a concentration of nearly 1% CCl4 in the liquid phase.

Analysis of the Heat Capacity for Pure CH4 and CH4/CCl4 on Graphite Near the Melting Point and Calculation of the T–X Phase Diagram for (CH3)CCl3+CCl4

We study the temperature dependence of the heat capacity Cp for the pure CH4 and the coadsorbed CH4/CCl4 on graphite near the melting point. The heat capacity peaks are analyzed using the experimental data from the literature by means of the power-law formula. The critical exponents for the heat capacity are deduced below and above the melting point for CH4 (T = m 104.8 K) and CH4/CCl4 (T = m 9...

Theory and Observation of Displacement Phenomena in Coadsorbed Films

Displacement refers to a surprising phenomenon observed in a number of adsorption systems. At low temperatures, some relatively inert gases, such as krypton (Kr) or methane (CH4), are found to displace molecules from preadsorbed monolayer films of a more condensable species, such as carbon tetrachloride (CCl4), from a graphite substrate. We present a simple thermodynamic model to explain displa...

Mobility measurements of two kinds of two-dimensional fluids. Methane adsorbed on graphite

2014 The diffusion coefficient of a CH4 submonolayer adsorbed on (0001) graphite is measured as a function of coverage and temperature by quasi-elastic neutron scattering. The experimental data permit us to clearly distinguish two kinds of adsorbed fluids, i.e. a 2D liquid coexisting with a 2D gas and a 2D hypercritical fluid whose density varies continuously with coverage. The mobility disappe...
